Ever wondered how life would have been without smartphones today. Seems absurd even at the very thought of it. Our entire day is governed by the emails we get, the notifications we receive, the likes and comments posted. The world today encircles around what is shown to be good instead of what actually is good. We all might have heard that phones shouldn't be used before sleeping from various sources but despite that, it doesn't bother people to any extent. It's very obvious as the last waking hour of our day has a direct impact on our brain waves which program our minds over time. Our mind has six states of awareness namely Delta, theta, alpha, beta gamma. We need to understand these states to move further ahead.
The Delta state suggests the lowest frequencies of our brain waves. This is the state when we are about to sleep and waking up. Theta waves are of slightly higher frequencies than the delta. It's the state when we are daydreaming or when our cognition isn't much involved. Alpha suggests a state when we are relaxed and beta is a state when we are working on something. And finally, the gamma state is when our mind is deeply focused on something and our cognition is at its peak.
Now having understood these states we need to look at how we spend our day, our lifestyle etc. Many people keep scrolling their phones before their eyelids drop down and so do their phones on their faces. Needless to mention that the first thing they do in the morning, is to reach for their phones. When we use our phones in the delta state our mind registers the information without much cognition involved. These pieces of information getting registered during the Delta state are highly responsible for rewiring our mind(subconscious). This hour of delta state sets the tonality for the entire day and if we come across some content that upset the mood it affects our mood for the entire day resulting in fatigue, sadness, anxiety etc. And if this habit isn't interrupted it may lead you to disastrous consequences the repercussions of which have to be faced by you and no-one else.
Moreover, these devices emit blue light rays which decrease the amount of melatonin in our brain, a chemical that is responsible for determining our sleep pattern. When our eyes are constantly exposed to these rays our levels of melatonin decrease drastically. Lower levels of melatonin are directly associated with insomnia. Exposure to these rays sends signals to our brain that it's daytime and you are not supposed to sleep now. This, in turn, degrades our mental health as well as our physical health. So the more rays you are exposed to, the lower levels of melatonin you have and thus your sleep quality is compromised.
The reason why people are advised to develop morning habits or rituals before bed is because our minds as suggested above are in the Delta state and information registered in this state is directly responsible for shaping our mind. It is said to win the day you have to win the morning but to win the morning you have to win the night. That implies that you have to maintain a win-win situation in your lifestyle for the betterment of your mental as well as physical health.
