Desperation, desolation, isolation, starvation and what not. We all go through these stages in the journey of achieving our goals. But is it true that the more you chase down something to achieve it the more likely you are to succeed? Or rather can we say that we increase the belongingness of what we want by chasing it down. It is said that you attract what you are, not what you want. So how does this principle work?. Should we run for the things we want in life or just let it be and wait for them instead of running after them
In this article, we will be discovering the science behind it.
We've often heard success stories wherein the ones who've succeeded say that they never expected the results they yielded and it was a great surprise for themselves. This is where the Backwards law comes into play. According to the backwards law the more you strive to achieve something the less likely you are to achieve it. This law works by the principle of 'the law of reversed effort. This theory put forward by Alan Watts suggests that the more we try to get something the more likely we are to achieve the opposite. Rather it states that if one stops trying to get something one wants, it will be achieved.
Now you might as well be wondering how does this work. The logic is when you focus more on the results your actions are always target oriented instead of being process orientated. When you focus more on the process you forget about the results which ease the pressure to bring out the best performance of yours. The anxiety of achieving the best results always deteriorate our performance hence prevent us from delivering our best. But what we've read so far can be explained generally by even a layman. For a better understanding, we can take a look at one of the popular quotes used by people now and then.
"The best way to get attention is to never want it. "
The reason people are dissatisfied with their lives is that they are trying too hard to be happy and that leads to further discontentment. If you want to be happy stop trying and stop being too hard on yourself. And you will witness wonders.
On this note, I would like to refer to a quote I wrote years ago which reads as :
" Tomorrow is theirs who accept the present as a present".
My personal experience. :
I have been believing in the power of visualisation for years but my conviction never strengthened as it is today, having witnessed it personally. In my 2nd year of college, I often had visualised that I will be working for an organization on account of my skills.
But I never ran for it neither did try too hard. And today I am delighted to have realised my visualisation that too in such style. I received a call for an interview for Amazon for the profile of product description. And I was hired. Little did I realise what had happened in no time out of nowhere and that's the beauty of it. It surprises everyone including you which is the most fascinating aspect of the backwards law. I know it's not too overwhelming so to say but this might as well be a precursor to a higher calling.
So the essence of life lies not in fulfilling our expectations but to witness the unexpected and the unexplored.
"True wisdom is knowing you know nothing."
