Even if you were to re-establish your life culture, would you have arrived at a different emotional verdict? If we were to quote the Talisman of English Literature William Shakespeare ' We don't see things as we they are, we see things as we are'. sounds eloquent enough for the same.
A tricky thought occurred to me the other day.
A candidate was interning for a firm went on for the job for the same profile. He considered himself good enough to not accept a salary offered to a fresher. Within the period of internship, he had studied about the firm inside out.
Finally, it was the day of his interview. He was undoubtedly brilliant in the interview and impressed the interviewers with his performance and skills, not to mention his resume. When came the time of what salary would be offered. He was to be paid for a project which was not a part of his internship, yet it proved to be very beneficial for the company to sign a great client. It could not be seen to have happened otherwise.
The project details were discussed and the table demanded a number. The intern made a huge demand. An overwhelming one. The authority felt otherwise and suggested a bargain. He affirmed them either he accepts this amount or he won't accept anything at all. They can count it as free. The members were a bit startled but after a while calmed down.
He seemed adamant and so the verdict was made that the project will be accepted as free. An unpaid service which he seemed to be fine with.
Now as he was about to leave, he went on " You know you got away with it, but sometimes when you think you have it, you actually don't".
The members were used to such unusual expressions of irrelevance from him. He further said " I have been pitching deals like these and most companies have agreed to my overwhelming yet thoroughly deserved amount.
The ones who didn't; well, they changed their mind eventually and so shall happen with you ".
The members still didn't agree. The intern finally left after offering a few words before his departure which sounded like " Well, I wish you sleep well at night, tonight onwards".
He seemed to be some sort of a freak possessed with the teenage energy of insanity.
They laughed him off. Their sleep was just as calm as it was. Serene and undisturbed that night. So the next day each arrived at the fact that he was bluffing.
Days went by. The members didn't seem to be getting along with their schedules well enough.
They became sluggish, lacking motivation and energy having the bottom areas beneath their eyes encircled. We now know what's happening. To their surprise, they did start having trouble sleeping at night. They reconciled his words and thought that it was happening because their conscience disallowed them a good night sleep as they robbed the boy of his pay for a highly beneficial service he offered which was not a part of his job. They called for a meeting with the boy.
He knew what was cooking inside. He was pleased. Having met them he enquires the reason for the assembly as he did not have a bit of clue about the meeting. The authority agreed to the amount proposed by him. He accepted it saying " I was trying to save your time, but you had other ideas".
Before the meeting, they did check up on his background. Turned out he did manage to get himself the amount he proposed from every company or client eventually. And so did happen with them.
But how on earth did he make it possible every time. Is it because everyone had the same level of conscience. Well, that's impossible. In a universe where the earth is only a small star, it can never be possible.
He was able to establish a discourse of getting the desired amount for the projects he willingly took up. There is no denying that he was great at whatever he did and that further cemented his credibility as a competent candidate. However, the point is, how did he intervene with the sleeping patterns of every employer who turned down his proposed amount. Was it his words that are so powerful? Probably not, was there some kind of magic involved, seemingly so but certainly not the case in this scenario.
So what was it actually that helped him establish such a discourse. Here's what was happening under the shadows. He spiked the coffee cups with pills of Theophylline, Caffeine and Appetite suppressants alternatively. The reason why the authority members did not feel disturbed while sleeping the first day since his offer was turned down, is because it took a while for the pills to take effect. The above-mentioned compounds dosed with their coffee over time resulted in extremely low levels of melatonin in their body(brain). Melatonin is a chemical essential for helping us sleep and maintain our sleeping patterns. However, lower levels of melatonin disrupt the sleeping patterns and result in the individual to suffer from Insomnia. Therefore, all the cognition involved in daily activities were affected inevitably, not to mention their sleep quality.
But were they aware of it? No. Were they able to find out, certainly not? Because his statement made it very clear to them that what they heard was right irrespective of what it was backed by given the current situation. This was how the discourse was formed. To have a discourse established it is important that people acknowledge and believe it to be true, else there cannot exist a discourse. They ended up believing it was conscience that disturbed their sleep.
This is how we are tricked to believe what seems to be the truth but isn't actually the truth having accordance with reality. We learn what we are made to learn and what the prevailing discourse wants us to learn.
The term epistemology also comes into play which means the practices and processes of knowing how we know what we know. Meaning how we have acquired the knowledge gathered by us. Similar practices were noticed by detectives when certain convicts tried to trick people into believing in phenomenon like resurrection.
