The generations have witnessed a lot of changes and developments. Obviously, along with other sciences, psychiatric treatment has reached greater heights along with psychotherapy. This ever-increasing emphasis on mental health is not just a reaction out of the blue. It is scientifically concluded that an average teenager of the day experiences anxiety equivalent to a mild psychiatric patient of the 80s. Researches have determined that there has been a 3x increase in narcissistic personality disorder.
Nowadays people may talk a lot about social media and its effects on our health and lifestyle. In this article, we'll be exploring the science behind it.
Our brain triggers the release of certain chemicals like dopamine, serotonin etc when we get likes and receive compliments on our posts shared on social media. Not only that, dopamine ( a chemical highly responsible for happiness and mood stability) is released in advance before sharing the post anticipating the likes and comments we are likely to get. This is what constitutes a greater part of what is called social media anxiety.
To understand it in a better way we need to look at the different brain waves or as neuroscience calls it neural oscillations of the human mind namely alpha, beta, theta, gamma, delta. The least state of awareness is the delta state for eg when one is deep asleep. Theta waves are of slightly higher frequencies associated with daydreaming or meditation. The alpha waves are associated with states of awareness but relaxed. The Beta waves are linked to an awareness when our mind is involved in thinking something. And finally, the gamma waves are the ones that encircle our brain when we are deeply focused on something.
So, why are we discussing so .much about neuroscience all of a sudden? Here's why. When we go to sleep or wake up in the morning our cognition is linked to waves somewhere between Delta and theta. This is a state of awareness that is highly responsible for determining your mood for the day thereby conditioning and hardwiring your brain in a manipulative manner. A majority of the population keep scrolling their phones before going to sleep and after waking up in the morning. This programmes our mind for the entire day and if we come across some undesirable content or news our mind is set to a sad tonality for the entire day. And now we are a victim of the vicious cycle. The cycle of a lie.
Having given the fact that one's mind is conditioned for immediate gratification people lose sight of long term goals and look for instant gratifications and the world today has designed itself to make one weak and to fall prey to immediate gratification. They might relieve one temporarily but it affects one's health disastrously in the long run. And when in grief or sadness as Simon Sinek (one of the most inspirational leaders and best-selling author)
says "one doesn't turn to a person but a bottle".
The lies our anxieties make us believe in is what results in our insecurities, inferiorities, complexities regarding relationships etc.
Although there are solutions to anxiety and depression what about the fact that people hesitate or are stigmatised of shame on account of visiting a psychiatrist or a therapist. One who's already suffering has to go through yet another horror of people discovering their seeking psychiatric help. If it is a trap then so be it. If life is a jungle to either be fought forever or ran forever so be it. If our anticipation is demanded every single moment of our life so be it. The life we have is ours to live, letting people's opinions control our actions and thoughts, thereby manipulating our behaviour and ultimately our life would be an act of naivety. Today might be bad, tomorrow might as well be worse but the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.
